All American BBQ Hotdog


  • 4-6 high-quality beef hotdogs
  • 4-6 sturdy hotdog buns, preferably brioche for a touch of sweetness
  • 1/2 cup your favorite BBQ sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey or brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1-2 tsp hot sauce or 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper for heat
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 cup crispy fried onions
  • 4-6 slices cheddar cheese, or more as desired
  • 4-6 strips bacon, cooked until crispy and broken into bits


  1. In a small saucepan, combine the BBQ sauce, honey or brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, hot sauce or cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic powder.
  2. Heat over medium, stirring frequently, until the sauce is smooth and slightly thickened, this should take about 5-10 minutes, Set aside.
  3. Preheat your grill, grill pan, or skillet over rhadium heat.
  4. Grill the hotdogs until they are nicely chaned and heated through, about 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally.
  5. Lightly butter the insides of the buns and toast them on the grill or in a pan until golden brown. This adds a nice texture and flavor.
  6. Place a slice of cheddar cheese in each bun so it starts to melt slightly.
  7. Add a hotdog to each bun.
  8. Generously drizzle the spicy BBQ sauce over each hotdog.
  9. Top with crispy fried onions and bacon bits.
  10. Serve the hotdogs hot with additional BBQ sauce on the side if desired. They go great with classic sides like coleslaw, potato salad, or corn on the cob.
