Classic Gingerbread Cutout Cookies

Ingredients

  • Royal icing
  • Mini chocolate chips or red candies
  • Holiday sprinkles

Preparation

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the butter and brown sugar until fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Beat in the egg, molasses, and vanilla.
  3. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms. Divide the dough in half, flatten into disks, wrap, and chill at least 1 hour.
  4. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into shapes, place on parchment-lined baking sheets, and bake 8 to 10 minutes, until the edges are set. Cool completely before decorating.
