Dead Bread

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 tsp anise seeds
  • Zest of 1 orange (orange peel)
  • 1/2 tsp cassia cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Extra butter & sugar for topping

Instruction:

  1. In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk. Let sit for 5 minutes. 
  2. Mix flour, sugar, salt, anise seeds, orange zest, and cinnamon. 
  3. Add eggs and butter to the yeast mixture, then stir into the flour mix until a dough forms. 
  4. Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes. Let rise in a warm place for 1 hour. 
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf. Add "bone" shapes on top using extra dough. Let rise for another 30 minutes.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes.
  7. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with sugar.
