Spiced Easter Bread With Cardamom and Orange Peel

Serves: 2 small loaves

Ingredients

For the Dough

For Egg Wash

  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Mix warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon sugar. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, remaining sugar, salt, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, orange peel, butter, and eggs. Mix into a soft dough.
  3. Knead 8–10 minutes (or 5–6 minutes in mixer) until smooth. Add optional mix-ins and knead briefly.
  4. Cover and let rise 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled.
  5. Divide, shape into 2 loaves, and let rise 30–45 minutes.
  6. Brush with egg wash and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25–30 minutes until golden.
